About Franschhoek

Franschhoek is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape with centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Franschhoek is known as one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Western Cape.

Trails wind through flowers and wildlife at Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve to views over Franschhoek Valley. The Huguenot Memorial Museum and neighbouring monument honour the area’s French settlers, who arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries. Franschhoek Motor Museum displays vintage cars amid mountain farmland.

Franschhoek is the Afrikaans word for “French Corner”. The town got its name after the French Huguenots that settled in the area in 1688.

It was the French that introduced wine and planted the first vineyards in South Africa and you will find many of the wine farms named after wine districts like Champagne and La Motte in France.
