Our interview with CHANTEL from CHANTEL AND MAY PHOTOGRAPHY
So we decided to learn a little bit more about our suppliers and see what inspire them and what gives them inspiration.
We have worked with Chantel at various of our events such as lavish picnics, engagements shoots, styled shoots and more! She has such a sparkling bubbly personality and really makes you feel comfortable when she is shooting.
We met with Chantel at one our favourite coffee shops in Franschhoek, the Big Dog Cafe (They make the best coffee!) and here is what Chantel had to say –
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hello, my name is Chantel. I am a 24-year old Lifestyle & Wedding Photography. I have loved a camera since my dad bought me a little pink point-and-shoot back in 2007. After school I studied commercial photography, then went to work as a photographer on board a cruise ship for 2 years. At the end of 2016, I started Chantel & May Photography and the rest is history.
Besides photography, I also love food, my four dogs, bad jokes, fashion & the mountains.
How would you describe your photography style?
I never quite know, as I feel I keep evolving as a person and so does my style along with it. But for the most part I strive to create shots where people look comfortable & feel natural. Something that will tell a story. I always say you should look at the album as a story book. Each photograph isn’t necessarily going to be a framable one, but it colours the story that you’re trying to tell. I also like a more warm, cosy & sometimes moody feeling, yet still bright in colour.
If you had to choose any place in the world to shoot, where will it be?
ALASKA! Or the Yellowstone National Park for a nature style. Definitely any place in Europe for a city look! But there are too many to choose from.
What about capturing weddings do you enjoy most?
Moment: definitely when the bride is coming down that aisle. I cry every.single.time.
Overall: I just love seeing people in love and happy and with their family and being so honoured to share this moment with them.
Also, you kind of get a beautiful person, professional hair & make-up & a stunning dress right there for you to photograph. Any photogs dream.
What has been your favourite wedding venue to shoot at and why?
The one I have shot at & loved is definitely the Paarl Belair Pavillion.
Which wedding venue would you like to shoot at next?
Ugh, so many Nooitgedacht, Bosjes, Natte Valleij & so many more!
What is your favourite image you have shot recently?
I am a sucker for close up shots, so my close up of a bridal pair just going in for the kiss, with the orange sunset peeping through just makes my heart happy!
Do you have any tips for couples who are looking for their perfect wedding venue?
I’d say that they should remember the venue creates the whole atmosphere. Smaller crowds, need smaller venues to maintain the warm, intimate, romantic atmosphere. If you like open fresh looks & decor, don’t opt for dark, moody, brick wall halls. Anything with SOME natural light is always good.
For the outside, make sure there are at least 2 different looking spots nearby. We can always make time to go somewhere else, but it’s good to have some spots close by too.
